On last night’s O’Reilly Factor/Talking Points Memo, O’Reilly had some stern words for “Law and Order” executive producer Dick Wolf. I have to admit, I don’t watch the show – nothing personal against the show, but in what time I have to watch t.v., I watch Fox so you don’t have to. But apparently, in one of the segments featuring the issue of illegal immigration, Wolf took a swipe at O’Reilly, Beck and Limbaugh — but the more I think about it, I think the real reason O’Reilly is so hetted up is because, according to O’Reilly, Wolf “made George Tiller, a guy who executed babies, thousands of them, made him a hero on his Law and Order show . . . Law and Order’s at the end of the road, very few people watch it, doesn’t have any cachet . . . any more . . . This guy Wolf is totally out of control . . . .” O’Reilly brought on his faithful crucifix-adorned lapdog, Laura Ingraham, to apply the spin . . . and, well, while O’Reilly’s peeved because he was mentioned, she’s a little peeved because she wasn’t mentioned in Wolf’s diss. First, in his Talking Points Memo, O’Reilly indignantly criticized Wolf for using Law and Order to promote his progressive agenda. Wait, I don’t know much about the show, but isn’t Law and Order, like, a fictional series? And isn’t Fox News, like, a news program? And isn’t fiction allowed some editorial license, where a legitimate news agency isn’t? And doesn’t Fox use its hosts and guests to promote its conservative agenda? Just asking. Anyway, O’Reilly recounted a recent Law and Order “SVU” which featured a guy who was killing the children of illegal immigrants. A liberal defense lawyer in the show said, “Limbaugh, Beck, O’Reilly, all of them, they are like a cancer spreading ignorance and hate, and they’ve convinced folks that immigrants are the problem, not corporations that fail to pay a living wage or a broken healthcare system . . . .” Calling it “defamatory and outrageous,” O’Reilly castigated Dick Wolf as a “coward for putting it out there” and called him a “liar . . . I have consistently defended poor people who only want a better life.”

O’Reilly played a few clips which showed him supporting illegal immigrants . . . and then went on to say that his “beef” is with the federal government not controlling illegal immigration and the actions of “violent aliens who wreak havoc once they get here.”

“Dick Wolf,” O’Reilly intoned gravely, “. . . Is a despicable human being . . . for distorting and exploiting this very complicated issue . . . it’s no accident it happened on NBC which is propaganda central in the USA . . . enough is enough. I’m calling out Dick Wolf.”

I took a look back through the archives of O’Reilly on his stance on illegal immigration, and lo and behold, I discovered that he’s lying like a rug when he says that his only beef is with the government not controlling illegal immigration and violent aliens.

Check One. In his March 28, 2006, TPM, O’Reilly talked about a “civil war brewing” between those who are pro-immigration and “those of us who are demanding that the federal government stop millions of people from illegally entering America” and castigated those who “reject tough enforcement of immigration law.” I’m a pretty good reader, and I didn’t see the word “control” in there anywhere. Sarah Palin might think “control” and “stop” are synonymous, but I don’t think many of us would.

Check Two. As Media Matters reported, on his radio show on August 18, 2006, O’Reilly wondered if “children of legal and illegal immigrants from Mexico who are attending school in the United States ‘have any kind of traditional value system at all, vis-à-vis what America used to be,’ or whether they are ‘taking their Mexican values, because most of them are Mexicans, and, you know, basically setting up Acapulco North.’” Far from worrying about government control of immigration, O’Reilly took a racist shot at the children of illegal immigrants, just as the killer on “Law and Order” took literal shots at children of illegal immigrants.

Check Three. On May 31, 2007, on The O’Reilly Factor, O’Reilly told John McCain, “But do you understand what the New York Times wants, and the far-left want? They want to break down the white, Christian, male power structure, which you’re a part, and so am I, and they want to bring in millions of foreign nationals to basically break down the structure that we have. In that regard, Pat Buchanan is right. So I say you’ve got to cap with a number.”

I’ve got Check Four, Five and Six in the hopper, but why waste the time? You get the drift.

Enter Laura Ingraham, and I have a philosophical question: Should evil people be allowed to publicly wear crucifixes? Guess that’s for another time . . . . Anyway, O’Reilly asked whether “stupid stuff” like this particular Law and Order show influences anyone, and Ingraham, faithful to the end, cited the show’s bad ratings share, and noted that Wolf is a left-winger who “used to do great work”, mentioning Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice. So, presumably, since the show’s ratings are so dismal, its influence is minimal and these two safeguarders of the right-wing talking points can stop talking, right? No such luck . . . .

Law and Order, Ingraham maintained, “Has addicted itself to this plotline that is . . . a left-winger’s view of what conservatives think. I think there’s a corollation between people fleeing “Must Flee” t.v., NBC, and this type of bias . . . I don’t think it has as much influence as some conservatives might believe, but I do think it’s despicable . . . .” I had to laugh out loud at how threatened Ingraham seemed to be by some comments made on a friggin’ t.v. series – and how ironic it is that she, of all people, would find it “despicable” that a t.v. series promotes left-wing propaganda and has a “bias.” FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) said it best, noting, “When it comes to Fox News Channel, conservatives don’t feel the need to ‘work the ref.’ The ref is already on their side.” And if NBC is “Must Flee” t.v., Fox must be “Focused On Xenophobia.” (FTR (for the record), “xenophobia” is defined as “a person unduly fearful or contemptuous of that which is foreign, especially of strangers or foreign peoples.”

O’Reilly liked that “Must Flee” t.v. reference, but quickly turned somber again.

“I don’t want my name used by a guttersnipe like Dick Wolf in a context that’s basically flat-out a lie,” O’Reilly pontificated angrily, apparently not realizing that many of us would very, very quickly prove who the liar really is. “Now, we proved with that clip that our problem here at The Factor is not with illegal aliens . . . .”

Ingraham chimed in, saying, “What he wants to do is shut conservative talk radio and shows like yours down from this topic of illegal immigration . . . He wants to intimidate us, so we’re gonna be afraid – I mean, I wish he mentioned me in that plotline . . . I’m offended that I wasn’t mentioned, frankly.” And who are you again?

O’Reilly angrily talked about how Wolf promoted murdered abortion doctor, Dr. George Tiller, as a “hero” – and despite the fact that Tiller’s suspected murderer was an anti-abortion nutcase, and that O’Reilly himself very likely contributed to the climate in which this valuable doctor was murdered, O’Reilly couldn’t restrain his ire, continuing to slander Tiller post-humously by saying he “executed” thousands of babies. SMH.

Ingraham gave O’Reilly the wrap-up he’s come to expect from her: “They’re creating this environment in the entertainment industry that is so antithetical to where most of America is . . . People are craving entertainment that deals with tough issues, for sure, but also doesn’t insult our basic intelligence as Americans, and Dick Wolf is just another Hollywood elite . . . it’s time to realize this franchise has seen its day.”

Hell, Fox News insults “basic intelligence” on a daily basis – that is, presuming its viewers have more than two brain cells apiece to rub together. If insulting intelligence were a barrier to cable news success, Fox’ ratings would be in the deepest recesses of an outhouse.

For now, only its hosts reside there.
